Abstract

Introduction: Nurses faced various life-saving situations during COVID-19. Objectives: To describe the experiences of nurses providing care to people with COVID 19 in a public hospital. Methods: Qualitative study, phenomenological approach. Participated twelve nurses who cared for patients with COVID-19 in a public hospital in Chachapoyas, Peru. Data were collected by online interview. Results: Four categories were obtained: a) Between sadness before death and happiness before discharge of the critical patient with COVID-19, b) Most discouraging situations of COVID-19: lack of resources, personal protective equipment, mistreatment and fear, c) Most encouraging situations of COVID-19: spirituality, humane treatment, learning, and hospital equipment, d) Recommendations: self-care, mental health and teamwork. Conclusions: Nurses provided comprehensive care to patients with COVID-19 regardless of the circumstances in which they found themselves. The temporo-spatial theory of the 21st century is proposed, where care is provided with wide protective barriers and sophisticated equipment, but information technology is used for therapeutic communication.
